Yesterday was a great day teaching at GCCN. Ralph, Bev and I primarily taught a bit about Canada, then Infection Control (using a glo-germ box and lotion) and updated their CPR. We taught a special initiative by the WHO and the American Academy of Pediatrics, called Helping Baby Breathe in the "golden minute" of life. It reviewed a procedure to stimulate breathing in a newborn by a birth attendant, by vigorously drying the newborn, suctioning out the mouth and then using an ambu bag to ventilate until the baby revives or the baby is transported to a health care establishment. The participants describe the government hospitals as being overcrowded and rather unsanitary. Often there are 2 patients per bed, a hospital with 1500 beds may have over 2500 patients. Often it is one nurse per 40 or 60 patients. The private hospitals (for the elite) are totally different, more western standards, nurses are 1:1 in ICU and 1:3 on the wards. Quite different stat's.
We are also amazed at how professional and serious the nursing students are, often 50 students in a class and they are so studious, no side discussions or distractions, they are very focused. I think education is such a key to success that no one dares to question the British style formal education atmosphere. We also find the students curious, caring and so sweet. Our visit to their dorm was very special. We plan to spend more time with the students in the next week or so.
We four ladies went to the tailor to have some salwar kameez's made up. See the fabric choices that they had to make!
